Does Satan Know Our Thoughts?

Teddy has provided the following message from John Macarthur:

Can we pray out loud?(By John MacArthur)

The following is adapted from a Grace Church Q&A session.

Can Satan hear what we say and know our thoughts? Should we avoid praying out loud because Satan might hear us?

There is nothing in the Bible to indicate that Satan is omniscient. There are no verses that say he knows everything or that he can read our thoughts. But he is very adept at predicting human behavior because he’s seen it operate for so long. He can anticipate what you might do in a given situation without knowing your thoughts because of his knowledge of humankind and because he has a supernatural mind.

But in terms of being omniscient and being able to read your thoughts (as God can), the Bible does not support that idea at all. It never tells us that angels are omniscient. And if a holy angel isn’t omniscient, neither is a fallen one. So, Satan can’t read our thoughts, even if he’s great at predicting human behavior because he’s seen so much of it.

I was speaking at a conference in Iowa about this problem. People were asking questions like “How do you deal with demons?” and “Do we need exorcism to get rid of demons?” Well, there are a lot of people today who say you do. I once read a book about deliverance in which the author described a doctor who was supposedly delivered from the demon of post-nasal drip. And in this approach, whenever you think you have a demon, there’s a certain magical formula you say or you run around or “plead the blood”—whatever that phrase means, since it’s not from the Scripture. The blood has already been pled in your behalf at the time of your salvation and that takes care of it.

There are people who advocate little formulas and séance-type practices with a Christian connotation, claiming that they can cast out demons and so forth. But when you get into the Bible, you find that dealing with the devil is really as simple as going to Ephesians 6 and putting on the armor of God. You see, in Ephesians 6, it says, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers,” right? We’re wrestling against demons and against Satan.

But what do we do about it? The best place to find out is to read right in that same chapter, isn’t it? Notice that it does not say, “Go get your demons exorcised with a Christian exorcism.” Nor does it say, “Go get somebody to cast your demon out.” It says, “Put on the whole armor of God,” and what that whole armor really consists of is righteousness. The heart of it is “the breastplate of righteousness.” The key then is to live a righteous, Spirit-filled life and to trust in the sovereign power of God.

So, there is nothing in the Bible that says Satan can read our thoughts. Certainly demons can hear what we say. They can understand what we say. And as I said before, they are very good at predicting the common responses of man because they’ve been at it for such a long time.

But don’t worry about that! A lady once said to me, “We whisper,” because she was afraid of demons hearing her prayers. My response was, “Well, that’s foolish!” You can go boldly before the throne of grace. In the Old Testament, it doesn’t say, “And David whispered to the Lord;” it says, “And David said unto the Lord”—and out it came. You never hear any time in the apostle Paul’s instruction to us about prayer when he says, “Don’t talk out loud.” When he wanted to pray, he just flat out prayed and it didn’t bother him whether Satan heard it because he was living in such a way that Satan couldn’t do …[last word missing, sorry, but I think the gist is Satan couldn’t do harm – RP]

Well, there are lots of points in there to agree with and to debate. Including those regarding exorcism, which particularly in the light of the recent Mercy Ministries publicity, is a controversial subject.

Many thanks to Teddy for providing the article.

  1. Mark 16:17 “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;”

  2. Heretic,

Its interesting that the particular verse you quote is actually a later addition to the bible an not part of the original gospel text.

Now on the subject of praying I thought jesus instructed his followers to do it in private.

  3. Sean, firstly, that’s not definitely known. In fact the majority of texts include the passage. Without the passage the book ends rather abruptly.

Secondly, it’s scripturally backed up that believers can cast out demons in the name of Jesus.

Christians do wear the armour to resist the devil, not because they have to be exorcised, since they should be freed from demon possession or torment once they have been saved.

However, it is the unsaved demonised who need to be set free from demons if they are tormented or possessed, so the ministry remains valid. Jesus said that we would do the same works as he did, and greater things, works referring to the ministry he had of healing, miracles, reaching, teaching and casting out demons from the tormented and possessed. This includes casting demons out of the demonised. “Who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil”.

I agree that it is perfectly correct to pray out loud. The devil has nothing to do with our prayers to God.

  4. For starters. I think people need to know the difference between a demon and a principality/fallen angel/spirit. They are both different beings in the spiritual realm.

  5. Oh. And if believers have the mind of Christ, Satan can’t hear what we are thinking. Unless our thoughts are on him. If we speak our thoughts, we’re either being foolish or letting God do His work to further the Kingdom of God and diminishing Satan’s Kingdom here on earth.

  6. Sorry Greg, posted too soon. Had Bill Palmer in mind from Matthew 6:23.

    Anyway, blog away please!

  7. Hey Greg! I’d like to know what you’d like to see on Signposts then.
    Any info?

  8. “Does Satan Know Our Thoughts?”
    Yes.

“Should we avoid praying out loud because Satan might hear us?”
No. Our praying are the best protection from Satan.
You need to read Masaru Emoto.

The dark powers were created to controll us – how much our Thoughts are clear.
If human`Thoughts are not clear, dark powers connected up with this person.

“So, there is nothing in the Bible that says Satan can read our thoughts. ”
    Research Bible more carefully.
You can research anoter version of Bible from 900 existing on the Earth now.

“Well, there are lots of points in there to agree with and to debate.”
    I never debate.
I research – and I know the answer.
“Criterion of Truth is experience”, – ancients told.

I deny nothing in this world because it was created not by me. There are 6 000 teachings of the East and the West on the Earth now. I deny nothing from its and I take from them all the best and make it a reality of my life without any denial also of the scientific and technical progress. Nevertheless the basis for me is the Orthodox Christianity.

  10. Anon,
‘Satan knows every thought.’ Yeah right, so how come he missed Jesus’ plan of redemption so badly?

Satan can only be in one place at a time, isn’t omni-anything except stupid, and the chances are that none of us ordinary workers will ever come into contact with him, or him us. He leaves that to the minions, who can only suggest thoughts, not read them.

“Oh. And if believers have the mind of Christ, Satan can’t hear what we are thinking”.

He hear, but cose of our clear, light thoughts he has nothing to do with such person.

But there are some being that hear only our words, not thoughts.

” If we speak our thoughts, we’re either being foolish or letting God do His work to further the Kingdom of God and diminishing Satan’s Kingdom here on earth.”

To earn the Kingdom of God we can only by our DEALS.

“believers can cast out demons in the name of Jesus.”

Only person who observe 10 tables has positive resultes.

  13. Anon,
‘Satan knows every thought.’ Yeah right, so how come he missed Jesus’ plan of redemption so badly?

Did you read about stopping of inter dialogue?

“He leaves that to the minions, who can only suggest thoughts, not read them”
    They can do it too.

  14. You have some interesting ideas, tanyahadan.

Counting off the top of my head (where satan can’t hear my thoughts), I think (not too loud) I only have six tables at my place, but I have had some very positive results with casting out demons.

I find that being a believer, and using the name of Jesus works far better than tables.

  15. LOL wazza – I think perhaps you are right.

I only have 3 tables in my house – 2 of them are small coffee tables – not much hope for me, is there!

Tanyadahan, I had a look at your website. All I can say is that if you find liquid diets and sun gazing leave you at the end of your resources at some stage, know that you can still call on Jesus to help you.

I knew someone who believed they could live on nothing but air, and summoned the willpower to do so. They called themselves a breatharian. They died – or else fell unconcious, entered a coma or whatever. However, they believe they died. They then met Jesus, who sent them back. Now they are a committed Christian, happy, eating normally (not at all fat!), and rely only upon Him.

    God bless you, Tanya.

    RP

  16. Maybe, there’s a language breakdown here and tanyadahan actually means 10 commandments. Just thinking aloud! “Is anybody listening?” [with echo effect, resonating into the nether regions].

Even if the devil could read thoughts, which he can’t, believers have been given authority over all the power of the adversary in the name of Jesus, who has won the victory on our behalf.

“Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee!”

“This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith!”

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested – that he might destroy the works of the devil!”

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them [anti-christ spirits] because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world!”

So there you have it, tanyadahan, believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will already have overcome any evil spirit anywhere in the universe!

    God bless you!

  17. “I only have six tables at my place, but
I have had some very positive results with casting out demons”

I think God will see your resultes.
Did you see any demon face to face?

“I find that being a believer, and using the name of Jesus works far better than tables”
    Exorcist would never say that.

  18. “Tanyadahan, I had a look at your website. All I can say is that …”
Now you can say if you didn`t research this sphere?

Living on sunlight, energy of space and liquid nutrition is future of humanity.
    Yiu need to read scientists.

  19. “You have some interesting ideas, tanyahadan”

It`s not ideas, I say from my research. Is is knowleges.

“They called themselves a breatharian. They died – or else fell unconcious, entered a coma or whatever”
I feel very good, my consciousness is clear. And it is strange for my how you even didnt understand that the speech is about 10 commandments.

  20. “Now they are a committed Christian, happy, eating normally (not at all fat!), and rely only upon Him”

    You live by past.
Dont you see what is happening with foodstuff around the world?

  21. “So there you have it, tanyadahan, believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will already have overcome any evil spirit anywhere in the universe!”

Where did you find that I dont work with the name of God?

  22. Tanya, we initially misinterpreted what you said because we don’t use the word ‘table’ to refer to commandment. But Facelift worked it out.

    Glad you are feeling good.

This is a Christian blog, so expect us to have Christian beliefs according to standard interpretations of the Bible. The Christians here all go to different churches or gatherings, but believe the only one we need to depend upon, is Jesus, as revealed in the Bible.

We believe we have a loving Father who sent His Son to die on our behalf, to restore our relationship with Him. As our Father loves us so much, He provides all we need, and we don’t need to rely on anyone or anything else to do that. He loves us so much that He even gave us freedom to reject Him, but is ready for us any time we want to turn back to Him.

We also believe that when Jesus gave His life, He rose again from the dead, in victory over all the work of satan. When we give our lives to Him, we have victory over those things too.

All of us here are working out our relationship with Him. We vary in the detail of our beliefs, but are brothers and sisters in our Lord. So we do not agree with living on sunlight, etc, as this was not taught by Jesus. Although we would agree that sunlight is good – and it was made by our God. Jesus ate all sorts of things, fish, bread, wine etc, and we follow His example in that physical sense. None of us would disagree that you can live on a liquid diet, but none of us would consider it necessary unless a doctor required it in some form for our benefit for a time.

Jesus taught that ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ The Bible also says that Jesus is the Word of God. So we live by eating ‘bread’ (food in any form, really), and by eating His word, which is our spiritual sustenance.

We believe that we learn how to live from Jesus example, as written in the Bible, and that God continues to teach us in personal relationship with Him. So we don’t need to follow any man’s teachings, and we test the teachings of those wise in our faith against what is written in the Bible, because no man gets it all right.

Any responses you get from any of the Christian’s here will come from this perspective.

  23. “Even if the devil could read thoughts, which he can’t, believers have been given authority over all the power of the adversary in the name of Jesus, who has won the victory on our behalf’

    He reads.
If a person research this world, not only say his own conclusions, but research, he find right answer.

The things you write have no connection to each other.
If the devil can read thoughts, he cant COMPEL a human to DO.

The thing you write is right if the faith/belive of these believers is poor.

  24. ravingpente

I am christian too, for what you say all that?
    I research Bible.

“So we do not agree with living on sunlight, etc, as this was not taught by Jesus. ”

But it was taught by Creator who gave this possibility to human DNA.

  25. Well, if you have accepted Jesus as your Saviour, and know no other Lord, then I’d agree you are Christian. However, we believe that Jesus teachings about how to live are recorded in the Bible. I am not aware of any teaching in the Bible about living on sunlight. We are free to live on what we like, according to our likes, dislikes, and the scientific knowledge of the day. The human race has lived on all sorts of things over millenia. If you want to live on sunlight and a liquid diet, it doesn’t mean you are not Christian. But it is not a Christian teaching found in the Bible.

  26. You understand, friends, that I follow the path of research, not blind faith, but thruthly faith – that are based on knowleges.

When you base on Bible you forget that there are 900 variantes of Bible in the world today. And thruthly faith need the researches from believers.

How can person to come to the truth – you or other person – if he has as a basis not his personal research but someone else’s belonging conclusions.

If to be honestly, we will not find any place in Bible where “living on sunlight was not taught by Jesus ”.

I dont call to live on sunlight, other people said me here about living on sunlight.

And I follow the path of research.

  27. “But it is not a Christian teaching found in the Bible”

    What you are looking for?
    Live as you wish.
But I will work about to open the potential that God put in inside of me.

  28. OK, Tanya. Yes, you are free to live on whatever you like, which I acknowledged already. It doesn’t mean you aren’t Christian.

Still, as a Christian, I rely on the Bible, as God’s revelation to us. Otherwise I would be rejecting the revelation we are given to base our understanding of Jesus upon.

Since you mentioned the 10 commandments, I imagined that you relied on the Bible in some fashion as well. That’s not really scientific research.

    Anyway – all the best.

  29. Interesting my friends,

Lets indulge in a little speculation, eh?

I for one am beginning to suspect that ‘our thoughts are actually bigger than our heads’!-
    ..and why?

because all too-often, Ive felt that someone close to me ‘caught my thoughts’, or was thinking about the exact same thing as they reached for the telephone…

I would not be surprised if the above were true.

Now, if guys like John Eldredge [Wild at Heart] can quote their experiences of being ‘tempted by the devil’ as they thought particular trains of thought while silently accompanying their wife in the car, then this must mean that ‘the devil can read our thoughts.’

“13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.-[James]”

    and yet,

“1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.(Mt4)”

‘Whats good enough for the Master is good enough for the man’- Did Jesus ‘speak’ first, in his exchanges with Satan at that time?-nope.

It is significant that Gods full plan for Satan has been published to the world; the imprisonment of demons ‘in gloomy dungeons”, etc, is fully documented by God-the overthrow and judgement of the evil One himself is predestined- YET, they do not act as if ‘the game is up’, so to speak, and try to infiltrate people at every opportunity.

How many of you out there have wondered how ‘praying works’?, and do you talk about it?

If Hannah can move her lips [in Samuel], and pray inaudibly, then the passing of sound is not necessary for God the Spirit (Jn4) to ‘hear’ what she is thinking-[also confirmed by Proverbs:Proverbs 20:27
“The lamp of the LORD searches the spirit of a man ; it searches out his inmost being.”

So then, what of the enemy spirit/s?-

…….almost certainly, because they are spirits too!

-My own view is that the demonic forces can see and hear fully in the Spiritual realm-they just cant put up a fight against the Christ!

36″No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father.”-[ Mt24]
-This shows that God can conceal his thoughts from anyone..everyone, in fact!

So then, this is how Christs plan of redemption could be hidden from his strategic enemy Satan, as Facelift has pointed out above.

(Hello Tanya, Im very glad to hear your thoughts; thankyou so much for visiting us!)

Friends, I understand pretty much what our Orthodox sister Tanya is saying-surprised at what she is thinking very publicly, and her statements are strongly functional-eg.

“The dark powers were created to controll us – how much our Thoughts are clear.
If human`Thoughts are not clear, dark powers connected up with this person.”

How else then, does this ‘world’ fall under Satans control?
    1 John 5:19
“We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.”

So my friendly thinkers, I do appreciate the conservative views expressed above, and do heartily encourage you all to examine and compare the texts with your own practical experiences-

    Z.

  30. I’m not sure where you live, Tanya, but where I live if you spent 13 hours in the sun you’d put your life seriously at risk. I dont think that was God’s intention.

I have heard that we should spend more time in sunlight because it increases our vitamin intake, and is actually better for us than having no exposure at all. But come to Darwin some time and attempt to stay out in the sunshine without any shade for even one hour and you’ll discover what I mean. Our average daily temperature ranges between 30 (on a cool day!) and 35 degrees Celsius. That’s around 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit for those who live in other places like the US. In the dry season it’s quite peasant (for us, anyway), and the humidity is low, around 40-50%, but in the wet season it is around 80-90%, which is pretty difficult to endure if you’re outside for ay length of time. Anyway, try it, but don’t expect Territorians to agree that more than an hour of direct sunlight is in any way beneficial.

I’ve lounged about on Australian beaches in various States over the years, and I can tell you it doesn’t take very long to know you’ve crossed over into dangerous territory as far as your skin is concerned, and you’ve done some damage. In fact, 20 minutes without sun-screen is pretty unwise.

The incidence of melanomas (skin cancers) in Australia is far higher than most countries, and we have far higher mean temperatures than most, which is a fair indication of what I’m saying . Now there is research which suggests hat melanomas are not as much the result of the suns rays as it as understood in the past, but it is still not a smart thing to expose our flesh to harmful rays for any great length of time. The only race which doesn’t suffer from melanoma are the Aboriginal tribes of Australia, apparently, which is interesting. The rest of us are susceptible to melanoma, especially if we have very fair skin types.

So sun-bake away, Tanya, but I don;t think you’ll convince many Australians that it is particularly wise. If you are an Australian with an accent, then maybe you should do some more research into melanomas!
    ___________________________________

By the way, I have seen demons and their contortions, their expressions and their cries, and it ain’t a pretty sight, but when they are expelled the people being set free are so wonderfully grateful and peaceful afterwards, so I don’t much care what demons look like whilst they’re being cast out. I’m only interested in them leaving. I’m not here to play around with them, or analyse them. Just remove them.

And demons can’t read thoughts. They don’t have a clue. They just suggest things which people take on as thoughts, that’s all. They use temptation and lust as a device. But why would anyone in their right mind want to listen to a demon or go along with their stupidity?

By the way, you claim to never debate anything, but you actually do, don’t you? And if you say, ‘No I don’t!’ then I know I’m right!

  31. I worked in the building industry for some time. Had the chance to see roofers working in Cairns (far north Australia). After a few years of working in the glare of the sun, and having it reflected off roofing material back at them, most of them suffered eye problems. I guess sunglasses were annoying to wear while working.

  32. For the record, since its come up again, I don’t believe satan can read our thoughts. When we live according to the flesh, we can be tempted by our own innate desires. Satan has been around a long time; he doesn’t need to read our thoughts to know our natures and how to appeal to us.

  33. And as for you David,

“he knows when we are sleeping he knows when we’re awake,
he knows when we’ve been bad or good..
so be good for goodness’s sake!”

(from Santa Claus is coming to town)

‘Yep!-he sure can!; -its in the ‘Song-scripture!’…gee, but I guess you DID have to write to him about yer present frum the North pole!”

and SO, ‘for the record’ as we say,

Whenever, dear folks, you are starting to ‘hear’ a second voice in your head, like the esteemed John Eldredge, then you may all rest assured that you are only ‘self-projecting’, and that is not the Devil suggesting or speaking to you, BECAUSE…although God can, the Devil just cant read your thoughts, especially if youre just sitting there and no particular stimuli would appear to have happened to you to lead him to think this or that by watching you….”

“And demons can’t read thoughts. They don’t have a clue. They just suggest things which people take on as thoughts, that’s all. They use temptation and lust as a device. But why would anyone in their right mind want to listen to a demon or go along with their stupidity?”

-Well, as a matter of fact Ive not known people to be particularly ‘clever’ either!- You really must write of your demoniac experiences to Paul Scanlon, Facelift, for he never saw one in over 30 years of ministry in Britain.

-I suppose these experiences happened in Non-Christian countries?; otherwise they would be of great technical interest to this man.

    Z.

  34. I agree with the assertion that Satan or demons cannot read minds. But like someone in an earlier post said, he doesn’t need to. He has been around a long, long time and he understands human nature only too well. One thing that I have discovered in some of my readings is this: although he can’t read your mind, he certainly can influence it by dreams or by projecting negative thoughts into your mind. It is the strength of your will and moral fiber that will determine just how effectively you can repel those attempted influences. Of course, if your will succumbs to his temptations, or you willfully submit to him, then you’ll need much more than just free will to remove the malignant force (aka exorcism). The greatest protection one has against the Enemy is to pray, live a Christian life, and don’t submit to his influences: lust, greed, envy, etc. I know it’s impossible to live a completely sin-free life, but you have to try to minimize sin as much as you can. The more you minimize it, the less influence he will have.

  35. Can demons get into computer software and make it malfunction?

As a general question, do spiritual entities affect only carbon-based life forms or do they also have an effect on inaminate objects?

  36. Years ago I had a cassette recorder that worked fine until I tried to play a Christian tape to an enquiring non-Christian friend. The darned thing stopped working. As soon as the friend was gone it started again, and had no further problems. Spooky, huh! 😉

  37. David: “As a general question, do spiritual entities affect only carbon-based life forms or do they also have an effect on inaminate objects?”

    They carry swords.

  38. [removed]

It’s important to know that Satan does not know what the Church of God is thinking. He has no access to our minds. But he can tempt us or make us forget that we have the mind of Christ, therefore we become more predictable and readable in thought, word and action. To those who live strongly in Christ, He can simply speculate what on earth they might be doing.

It’s interesting to note in Ephesians that he doesn’t fight Believers. He’s not dumb enough to fight against us when we are equipped with the Sword of the Spirit to deal with him. He continually fires unbelief, bitterness, irritation, condemnation and other irrational things at us from his fiery dart oozy.

Bit of a prompting for research on the ‘fiery darts’. Was greek fire invented in those times or much later?

  39. David,

I remember reading an article about an interview with Marilyn Manson. Before he made it big, Marilyn was recording some of his music with a friend. After they finished, the rewinded the tape to hear the quality of their tape. Marilyn claims that during the recording, a voice surfaced talking about satanic-related material, and then the original recording continued. Needless to say, both Marilyn and his friend were spooked because it was his first time experiencing the supernatural. The short answer to your question is this, demons can leave “evil” in inanimate objects. When a witch casts an evil curse (with the aid of inhuman spirits) using someone’s personal belongings, the Christian Church says the belongings, or objects, must be burned. This must be achieved, along with an exorcism, for the evil to be completely vanquished.

  40. Yay! I’m back from internet week fast!!!
Now let me tackle this fun one.

Satan can’t possess Christian’s or read are thought.
Him and his armies can, however possess non-Christians. I’ve heard lots of testimonies on this. To those in the world that have relied on their own strength to fight demonic possession and attacks in their own strength, have themselves turned into a prison of their own dead spirit. They are strong willed, but can’t be changed or transformed. They are set as stone in their strong-willed condition which many do find in the end to be living hell. Only God can break them open and make them tender again.

The older people get, the more they can predict human behavior. The same with Satan. He knows how predictable we are. He doesn’t need to read are thoughts. He knows the condition and frailty of humanity well enough to know how he can take advantage of us. He has access to the thoughts and bodies of non-Christians, but cannot possess Christians.

I hope Tanya comes back. I really like her orthodox views.
    And hello Believer!

  41. My 5 year old son refuses to eat beans, since little friends told him about the effects. Maybe your picture link will inspire him to try them out again.

  42. OMG! The Golgothian is manifesting! (If you’ve seen Dogma)

My views on demons and the spiritual remain valid after other things I have witnessed in these departments. Some Christian’s can be under possession of some.

But they are rooted in places before the person knew the Lord. Every time.

    or

Some object or something geographical can keep them bound to torment people.

This stuff is always mind boggling. But observations help us to understand the supernatural.

  43. Satan does not know your thoughts…..

Satan only knows what we allow him to know what we talk about if we constantly say that we hurt or our marriage is failing well guess what your gonna constantly hurt and your marriage is gonna continue to fail u have to be able to have faith and pray to heal and for a strong marriage and constantly speak positive cut the negative out
