Mary’s Foot

In the light of a discussion on the thread ‘Removing a Post’, which is now commenting on approaches to Catholic World Youth Day, here is a photo I took on a tour of the Vatican which I promised. It’s a picture of a statue at St Peter’s in Rome, showing Mary crushing the Church of England (represented by a tower in the location of England), under her big toe.

I found it rather amusing at the time!

  1. “Roman Catholicism has always taught…canons and decrees of the Council of Trent go like this, quoting: “No one can know with a certainty of faith which cannot be subject to error that he has obtained the grace of God. No one, moreover, so long as he is in this mortal life ought so far to presume as regards the secret mystery of divine predestination as to determine for certain that he is assuredly in the number of the predestinate. For except by special revelation it cannot be known whom God hath chosen unto Himself. If anyone saith that a man who is born again and justified is bound of faith to believe that he is assuredly in the number of the predestinate, let him be anathema,” so says the Catholic Church. Curse those people who feel secure.

Though the Council of Trent was held in the sixteenth century, the teaching of the Church on this point has not changed. As evidence I quote the following from a recent Roman Catholic Dictionary of Theology, this is what it says: “Certainty of salvation,” heading, “A concept of Protestant theology which signifies a belief in justification so firm that this belief is inconsistent with any doubt of a man’s ultimate salvation. Such a certainty of salvation which Catholic theology describes as absolute was repudiated by the Council of Trent because whereas the Christian is absolutely forbidden to doubt what God has done in Jesus Christ, or to doubt his universal salvific will, this does not exclude all possible doubt of one’s own eternal salvation,” end quote. What a silly statement. You can’t doubt anything but your own salvation.”

    Let’s reverse the curse!

  2. Aha You First!!

Um, do you quite realise just how much creaky unscriptural baggage like this the Catholic Church carries Teddy?

And Just Where do we begin with the Jewish traditions; the Talmud: Mishna,Gemara, Kabbala,…? [You DO know; Im just illustrating for effect!]

And probably the literal TONS of speculative and incredible guff just about all faiths and denominations have produced through the centuries?- I remember throwing-out bookshelves of dusty religiousy Christian textbooks- I keep a tiny fraction of them today, and I came from a ‘Non-denominational’ background!-I was full of lines I was petrified of crossing myself!

Do you recall how many of the ‘Church Fathers’ were WRONG, in one way or another?-hmm?
-Origen?, Aquinas?….Is Jude Canonical, really? [and he was Jesus’ brother!]

Would Zeppelin be Fundamentalist to quote Matt7?-

6He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
” ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
    7They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.'[b] 8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men.”

Our OWN guys are still struggling with ‘The commands of God”-bit!
[eg. My own Senior-pastor doesnt believe in ‘washing feet’!-dig that.]

–But its funny how ‘unfolding revelation’ works eh?..”Oh, but Lord I just didnt know!”-

It just seems to me these people need a chance to begin to let go of their political crap, probably just like the rest of us. You know very well most Catholics are discouraged from reading the Bible, as they officially regard it as a ‘dead-letter’; therefore so wonderful theyre being re-encouraged to study scripture again; with the Spirits help, alot of hard ground can be broken up, without reference to tradition & legislation, I’ll hazard.

Are these people without the Holy Spirit?- of course not; Godly signs, healings and wonders have been happening to them for centuries, yet, rather like the rest of us, alot of nonsensical fairy-tale-like doctrines as well as shamsters criminals and perverts have grown up alongside; [you know about the “Assumption of Mary” I suppose?-who could believe anything so crazy?]

And yet, even ‘our own’ people experience the same phenomena from God; ‘fragrances’, ‘visions’. or whatever.

According to 2Timothy3:1-10 , many people in this age will ‘have a form of godliness but deny His power’; these people ….”are rejected”, -and we may know many Catholics who are like this, but probably a jolly lot of other denomination-types, too!

My point is; you may need to let go of the labels and ‘articles of faith’ and let Christ do His thing; people are ONLY born-again by the Spirit, and the Master has a very uncanny way of turning-up and transforming lives, while the paperwork of officialdom remains meaningless, or is very slow in catching-up.

‘Ahh, I can see such huge, stinky rotten planks in my brothers’ eyes, -but tell you what, Ive got problems trying to remove these tiny specks from my own!’- Funny how so much of this comes home to us, in our personal experience of God.

There doesnt seem any point in crusading against the Council of Trent, when it may very well have a way of crusading against itself, and caving-in one day.

    Love, Z.
