Failing your way to success…

Edison never considered his achievement of inventing the light bulb to be a failure, even though he made 10,000 pre-versions which did not light up. They were steps on the way to success. It only took one.

Abraham Lincoln failed at a great many things before becoming what he was really destined for, and actually good at – being the President of the USA.

Honda adopted Edison’s philosophy of ‘failing’ their way to success. This video clip is an interesting testimony on how they failed many times before making themselves the best Indy engine producers.

OK, so we’re not saved by works, or constantly failing. We’ve already failed utterly before we come to Jesus. We’re saved by grace through faith. We just have to acknowledge our need of Him, and he will receive us to Himself.

But we are called to live this life until we do eventually go to be with Jesus, and it’s not always easy. We have dreams that can be shattered, just like the drivers in the video who didn’t quite realise their dream the first time around, or the engine makers who blew a few gaskets before they made the best engine available, or the drivers who literally hit the wall before they began the process of winning races, or Edison as he fashioned his 9,999th globe.

Sometimes, as Christians we mess up on the way to getting things right. It’s not how many times we fall or fail but whether we give up or get up that determines whether we succeed in our quest.

It’s the same with pursuing a dream, or a vision, or a task God gives us. Paul did eventually get to Rome, albeit to become a martyr. Abraham lived his life seeking the New Jerusalem. He died in faith having not achieved his dream. His children’s children, on the same journey, will.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
Psalms 37:23-24

The key is to keep going, no matter what, eyes focused on Jesus and His promise of eternal life.

The LORD upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look expectantly to You, And You give them their food in due season. You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. The LORD is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works. The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them.
Psalms 145:14-18

  1. Great stuff Steve. I’ve seen that video before, but it was good to see again.

Good to remember that churches are works in progress too.

  2. Fantastic Steve. Read this 3 times now and it led me to read over psalm 37 again. Beautiful psalm. Read John MacArthur’s ideas of knowing the will of God where he quotes this psalm too.

Great scriptures there. And the message of not giving up is something I can never get enough of. Just surprised that when there’s so much argument here usually that a post like this doesn’t lead to more edifying discussion.

    But, thanks from me anyway.
