One of the most prominent members of the Westboro Baptist church has left it after spending her life as part of the fervently anti-gay movement.

Megan Phelps-Roper, who looked after social media for the church best known for its slogan “God hates fags”, announced her departure in a post on the blogging platform Medium in which she also revealed her younger sister Grace, 19, was also leaving.

In the post, called Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise, the 27-year-old explained how she had become disillusioned with the teaching of Westboro, which is widely considered one of the most detested church groups in America for its “God hates fags” campaign.

Phelps-Roper writes: “We know that we’ve done and said things that hurt people. Inflicting pain on others wasn’t the goal, but it was one of the outcomes. We wish it weren’t so, and regret that hurt.

“We know that we dearly love our family. They now consider us betrayers, and we are cut off from their lives, but we know they are well-intentioned. We will never not love them.

“We know that we can’t undo our whole lives. We can’t even say we’d want to if we could; we are who we are because of all the experiences that brought us to this point. What we can do is try to find a better way to live from here on. That’s our focus.”

The Westboro Baptist church gained notoriety for demonstrating at military funerals across the US, claiming the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are God’s punishment on America for tolerating homosexuality.

The church has a small congregation, largely made up of the extended family of the Reverend Fred Phelps, the grandfather of Megan and Grace Phelps-Roper. Their mother, Shirley Lynn Phelps-Roper, is one of its most outspoken representatives. In 2007 the BBC broadcast a documentary on the church by Louis Theroux, which was billed as The Most Hated Family in America.

As well as picketing military funerals, the church also pickets sporting events, concerts and other occasions in the apparent hope of publicity. As well as being anti-gay, it is also anti-Jewish, anti-Catholic and anti-Chinese.

In an accompanying Medium piece, Damsel, Arise: A Westboro Scion Leaves Her Church, Jeff Chu describes what led Megan, who was named by the Kansas City Star as “the future leader” of the church, to leave in November.

Chu writes that her ephiphany over Westborough’s hateful dogma began with a Twitter discussion with Jewish blog Jewlicious’sDavid Abitbol. She came to realise the problems with condemning people to death, arbitrarily fixating on the “sin” of homosexuality and believing that the church had all the answers.

The church told the Topeka Capital Journal that it did not know the whereabouts of the two women.

  1. Hurt filled people hurt people. Thank God for her epiphany. I do not concur personally with aspects of homosexuality, but I do not condemn those who do – that is not for me or any human agency to judge, it is simply not for me as a lifestyle choice nor an inclination. We have gay women neighbours, you could not ask for more agreeable respectful non invasive people – quite frankly the best neighbours we have ever had and despite everything, that is what it is all about – being good neighbours. I still remember the day I offered them some of the abundant produce from my garden – ripe red tomatoes, some fresh Basil (mmm) and two of the most impressive ancient strain variegated ribbed Zucchinis you might see – I was so proud of them – there was a pregnant pause – I blushed and thought “you bloody idiot, what were you thinking.” She smiled and thanked me for my gift – a gracious lady with a sensitive heart and a sense of humor which defused a sticky moment of naive gaucheness. You have to laugh. We are a funny lot, humans. Never forget, the word wrath is also passion, and God’s passion is His mercy, and His mercy endures forever – otherwise we would all be screwed, but we came form Him and we are His and He cannot deny Himself, but while we may rest in this assurance, we do well not to presume upon it, nor to put God to the test.

  2. See, I can be remarkably reasonable…and utterly irascible. Its the Libran in me, he doeth the equivocating…LOL

  3. “you could not ask for more agreeable respectful non invasive people – quite frankly the best neighbours we have ever had ”

Funny, there’s a lot of talk about the Pastor in the US who didn’t tip. Articles have been written by people with waitering experience who said that church people were the worst customers – low tipping, cheap orders, staying for hours etc. Many Christians who remember their watering days had lots of bad experiences.

We need to lift our game.

  4. Was Jesus really a Libran? Certainly not a Capricorn, maybe an Aries, or a Leo? Or was He really just all things to all men? I think so.

  5. As my wife says, the best thing most Christians could do is to put their Bible down and get in touch with their inner voice, their God given conscience. She maintains that we trust in our own understanding way too much and generally think way to highly of ourselves. Well, she has had to live with me! Iron sharpens iron and sparks will result, but the tongue is a fire, and is set on fire of Gehenna – it is that way to reveal us – better to have your issues burned off this side of the grave by tossing hem on the altar – you may as well – it’s where they all end up anyway.

Just an aside, but today I encountered the leavening of one Jacob Prasch – do any out there know what this guy seems so hateful? I have trouble with Christian Zionists. To me they are the CZ of God’s jewel box and the Hebrews Roots and the Emerging Church movement is the last level on the Tower to the heavens. Funny that he favors Hebrew Roots but rejects Emerging Church.

God told me a while back that the whole world would turn on Israel and that I was NOT TO HAVE ANY PART IN IT! He assured me that He would spare His people but that very many would die, the defenders of the OLD ways.

I also have a strong inclination that what many Xians call the rapture is actually a mass dying off of those who doggedly cling to the old and prevent God moving such that the man of sin, the son of perdition, might be revealed, so that Jesus may destroy him with the Brightness of His Appearing. Aa-meen – so be it.

As sad as it might sound to some, I sense in the time to come that very many shall go home to be with Jesus, but that the living will envy the dead. Back in 1983, I volunteered to go through the worst of the tribulation to help others – Jesus asked me if I would be prepared to deal with that and be offered up as a martyr. Hey, if possible I would open the batting AND the bowling, that’s just my nature – I cannot wait to pad up and get in there. Besides, dribbling in your gruel in an old peoples home, clinging to the flesh life like it is the only thing that matters, is no kind of way to go out! Or as George Whitefield said just before he died, “Better to burn out than to rust.” Gee Johnny Rotten stole that off an 18thC Anglican/Methodist Preacher!

  6. “Back in 1983, I volunteered to go through the worst of the tribulation to help others ”

That sounds like a great idea for a movie!

” She maintains that we trust in our own understanding way too much and generally think way to highly of ourselves. Well, she has had to live with me!”

    Priceless stuff Ian.

  7. I saw both of Louis Theroux’s documentaries on this group. In the second documentary a few young people had left. They were totally cut off from their families, their Mothers and Fathers had disowned them and would not speak to them – for life.

The parents wouldn’t even acknowledge that they were sad about it, which was the most scary thing.

So its no small thing that Megan has done, how many of us are willing to lose all our family and friends for the sake of truth.

This group will slowly die after its founder passes away, certain, justified, saved and desperately lonely and confused.

But what will be the legacy for the name of Christ?

  8. As believers, so often our last resort is prayer instead of our first impulse – and I am as guilty, nay probably more so, on this wise. When and where we are still rooted and grounded in our own understanding we ten to be reactive in rage instead of proactive in prayer and act out of anger rather than through indignation.

I have found the best way to deal with “burn in hell haters” is to asked them who they would like to see in hell for what has been done to them, or more simply, who do you want to see go to hell?

Jesus is the Master of reductive reasoning, he breaks it down to the simple basics of where we are at, and He does not mince words (nor make money with them). When you break it down and make it personal, when you compel someone to couch it in personal terms instead of wide-ranging generalizations, then it becomes them being the judge and hopefully, they might see how stupid they are being – hopefully.

I had a woman once try to convince me of hell – she had all the arguments and was zealous and intelligent – so I asked within “Lord?” and He said, “Ask her who she personally want to see in hell” so I did. Her reaction was to splutter, “Well, no one of course” and I heard within, “Yes she does, ask her again” so I did and she reacted “No one” – so I said “I think there is, isn’t there?” and she grabbed at her head screamed a stifled scream as the expression of her inner torment changed her face into an ugly mask and she ran from the shop like the wounded little girl who had been abused repeatedly as a child by her father and brothers and uncles – true story – she was MESSED UP.

We often think it is about providing better answers (apologetics, exxing Jesus etc) whereas Jesus is the Master of the BETTER QUESTION – you can argue against another’s opinion but you cannot gainsay the wisdom of Jesus – or as we say down under, instead of being an epistle read of all men, He will cut you up for dunny paper. To put it bluntly, if you want to get out of the crap, you first need the crap (beaten?) out of you. Fall on the Rock, and have that hardened heart of stone, the tables of the Law, broken, such that God might reveal HIS LAW OF LOVE, graven in hearts of flesh. Jesus became FLESH AND BONE and He is aware of all our weaknesses an in our weakness, His strength is perfected. You won’t get this once a week, only once you are weak, for through much tribulation He draws many sons to glory, and He purges and cleanses all who come to Him in faith.

Salvation is one thing, it is a start, but then there is conversion. The intention of Jesus to circumcise our hearts occurred in type when all died in Him and all were resurrected. This is eternal salvation. The practical application of this is temporal salvation, whereby the eternal becomes our present experience, thy kingdom come, and we walk in the Spirit. We either walk down the middle of the Highway of Holiness or we are drawn to the left (license) or to the right (legalism) by blind guides and so end up in the ditch at the side of the road, so to speak, and life’s a bitch when you livin’ in the ditch, which is an elongated pit, or and endless grave.

Let’s face it guys, compared to every other venal sin, self-righteousness is the stinkiest of all, but to the ones who deal it, it is quite acceptable – their shit don’t stink, right?

  9. I included that clip above as it is often those outside of the conformity of Churches who see through the hypocrisy of our being drawn aside by strifes about words and the ways of others while blithely ignoring the hate crimes and plunder which affords us our comfortable Western lifestyle – more concerned about faggots than facts.

Off topic but you Aussies doubtless remember the agony of Farmers who were dispossessed through the droughts and lost their land? How so much land passed into Rothschild and City of London hands? It was stolen from the Abo’s and now they have stolen it from you.

If your wealth and well-being is the treasures of heaven, then thieves cannot break in and steal. He who would retain his life shall lose it, and he who shall lose it for my sake and for the kingdom, shall gain it – loss is gain – consider all things LOSS (crap) that you might GAIN Christ. 0(:->)

  10. “We often think it is about providing better answers (apologetics, exxing Jesus etc) whereas Jesus is the Master of the BETTER QUESTION ”

  11. “This group will slowly die after its founder passes away, certain, justified, saved and desperately lonely and confused.”

Probably. Depends on who the successor is and how they go about things. Look at a group like the Mormons. Religious groups and their dynamics are pretty fascinating study.

It all comes down to the leader. Look at the various denominations.

But I’d say you won’t be seeing the Westboro Baptists for two long. Unless one of the kids is a very strong charismatic type.

For such a tiny group they’ve got their share of the limelight though.

I think there should be a law against demonstrating near a funeral.
    It just isn’t right.

  12. The reason they get so much press is that they are the exception rather the rule and very in your face with it. There will always be renegades.

  13. Yes Q, and He answers us according to our delusion betimes to reveal our hearts. He showed me what it is like for a person first encountering Jesus as He really is, their having passed from this world. It was quite an experience – in a moment – in that moment – they simply saw Him and knew Him and fell at his feet as if dead – and He stooped down and gently picked them up, and they saw him anew and fell at his feet, and He picked them up, and they fell, and as they rose into the air and each time the person saw His Goodness, His Godness, they swooned and collapsed – it was like a dance – they had not known Him and now they did and they saw Him for who He really is, for He had always seen them for who they really were – in Him.

  14. Where do I get this stuff? Straight from the source, and my long suffering wife, of course…it seems sometimes I am playing catch up with her…0(:->)

  15. Gods love is for everyone. If a homosexual turns to God and his SIN is taken away, and is no more, then this is evidence that Christ’s love abides in him.
Now (instantaneously and immediately and without delay) may not be the correct time for the deliverance of this sin.
But be assured and understand, that the trial and proving of faith, will bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience.
    God’s patience means salvation.
    Ecclesiastes 3
    New International Version (NIV)
    A Time for Everything

3 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
9 What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[a] no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.

15 Whatever is has already been,
    and what will be has been before;
and God will call the past to account.[b]
16 And I saw something else under the sun:

In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.
    17 I said to myself,

    “God will bring into judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.”
18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath[c]; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

Indeed, there is an appropriate time and a response for every circumstance, since human misery weighs heavily upon him.

  16. I guess the BIBLE gives us the bottom line. Some things God hates. He loves the SINNER not the SIN. Homosexuality is SIN to GOD. So is ADULTERY. It is all SIN. God through JESUS calls us to REPENT. Old fashioned I know, but God dosn’t change. We try to change HIM, but HE does not change. I am glad. He is the one constant in this world.

  17. The statement “God hates fags” is actually logically correct. It’s just stated in a very rude way.

    Let me explain:

    “God” is life.
    “fags” are obviously homosexuals.
Homosexuality is a perversion of the reproductive, life-giving properties of sex. It is therefore an insult to life and so an insult to “God”.

Basically, life “hates” homosexuality. Homosexuals are souring their own connection to the life force. It’s not really hatred in an active sense. It’s more along the lines of self-destruction on the part of the homosexuals.

That’s all the “God hates fags” people are trying to say, in their own misguided way.
